Virus infection

By Eminent87 ·
Hi,

I have a windows xp pro with sp1 and the computer got infected with the w32.netsky.p worm a couple of days ago and I was able to removal the virus. Now my computer does not function properly anymore. When I hit the Start button, I can't see anything anymore. My internet explorer does not have the tool bar on top anymore either. Also, a lot of system services does not work either. Does anybody know how to fix this problem?

I have tried just about everything but haven't been able to recover it yet. I tried repairing it with the XP cd but that didn't help. I also tried reinstalling it but that didn't help either. I guess my other option is to reformat and do a clean install but this would be my last option. Can anybody offer me some suggestions?

Thanks!

Had you turned off system restore?
If not you can try going back a ways. You can try SFC.exe /scannnow

Thanks for trying but I tried that but it was unsuccessful. The file verification window would pop up but then it just freezes.

At this point I think I'm just going to give up and just do a clean install. Thanks again.

Try booting the system in safe mode and scanning with the latest virus definitions. Also, have you tried to restore the system to an earlier state? One last thing you can try before wiping the system is taking out the hard drive and installing as a secondary drive on another system and scanning with antivirus this is what I usually try as a second to last resort with 85% success rate.
