I have been in Computer Repair/Education for quite some time now. I like to think I know what I am doing from the great amounts of success I have.
Nowadays, it seems as if removing viruses/spyware/malware is getting harder and harder. I am talking about some of the same lame spyware and viruses that have been around forever – such as Vundo/Virumonde, WinAntiVirus 2006/7/8, DNSTracker, etc. I use a very tried and true toolbox of not only portable but installable applications that are industry respected and standard. They are updated, and I only run these tools from a pre-scanned, clean flash drive.
For instance, my very own Dell D600 laptop running Windows XP with ALL updates and AVG 8.0. I also have SS&D running – and I got infected with a DNS redirector. I scanned in safe mode, using everything I had – to no avail. I actually had to format and reload my system!
Another instance is right now on a client’s PC – she has a Compaq Presario desktop running XP with SP2, and it took me DAYS to get rid of Vundo when it usually would have taken a few hours.
What is going on? Antivirus and Antispyware companies have a hard enough time keeping up! Is this a newer trend? Any thoughts?
