Vista and IE

I have recently purchased a new machine with Vista Ultimate. I loaded Office 2003 on it. When I open a .doc file in IE it thinks it is a picture and will not open. If I save it and open it in word it opens OK but has a Power Point Icon associated with it. What is going wrong.
