Vista black screen with curser

By zlitocook ·
started working on a brother in laws computer with video problems. It was a bad video card; it is an HP media center with an Nividia 8400 GS card.
After replacing the card the video was fine but the computer boots in to a black screen with a curser. Even in safe mode, it will show the screen saver after a bit and if you press shift it will bring up the sticky keys.
I have spent hours looking through the same problem on TechNet and Google, none of the fixes work for me.
When this started months ago MS said it was a virus/malware problem but it has turned in to a major problem for many.
I did use a live CD to save his info but would really like to know how this happened, and how to fix it. This problem is not computer related, it happens to Dell, HP and IBM. I have done every thing that was suggested, except for a compleat system restore because of the work my brother in law and his does. But I guess I will have to if nothing works. Any help would be great. I can give a full list of what I have done so far if needed. Thanks

from what I would think, this would be a driver load/confirmation issue.

If you're getting StickyKeys confirmation, then you're in the GUI. it almost sounds like Vista is waiting for you to approve something Administratively to load before continuing to load the desktop and all.

Also, I might try loading an updated video driver if you can.

Or, it could be a registry problem. You might boot into DOS mode and check for a backup registry file and manually restore that.

Otherwise, I'd suggest booting from a new drive, backing off all his work, then doing a restore or reload.

Sounds tough. Good luck

On Technet at MS there are 11000 post with the same problem. Most are not fixed on Google there are many times that.
I have all ready backed his files up and I am just waiting for him to give me the go ahead to wipe and reinstall.
A side note this most freqently when you ether when you get an update from MS or if you do a hard shut down. Thanks

Vista black screen with curser

I've had the same exact problem since November 2009. Tried all kinds of fixes. I'm in the process of backing up 100 gigs and starting completely over. Have you had any luck with fixes or have you already wiped and reinstall?

My brother in law, he has had it with Vista and HP!I have tried over thirty fixes for this problem. Mine is definitly caused buy a malware problem. It locks the registry so any changes you make ether though the command promt or a live CD will not happen after reboot. My brother in law told me to use the restore option for HP this will wipe the drive and restore it to factory new.

I gave up

by zlitocook In reply to Vista black screen with c ...

On HP on this, they seem to be completely out sourced and I had trouble trying to get them to under stand the problem and what I have done to fix it. They said first thing to repair and needed access to the computer. I told them they could not access it because it could not get past the log on screen. They said that is not possible and to try again.
And Obama wants to increase H1 visas. I saved his data and reinstalled.
Next time I will do my best with an HP but will suggest a wipe and reinstall.

That Obama wants to increase H1B visas.
He actually worked to insure that there were restrictions in place esp. for those that received TARP monies.

I just said that I had trouble understanding the person. He had a bad accent and talked to fast.
I have no problem with using help desk as long as they can help me.

He gave up on trying to get his old serttings back. I used the HP back up to restore his system.
He was greatful because the Geek squad said they could not save his files.
