I am trying to assist someone with a Pavilion a6030n/Vista Home. The system has been performing well for several months, but has recently been hanging immediately after the “welcome” screen with a black screen with a mouse pointer arrow. The poiner responds to the mouse, but the system does not proceed to finish coming up for at least a minute.
I have used msconfig to restart in Diagnostic Mode, restarted, accessed the Services list and set groups of 20 or so to “automatic” and then rebooted to narrow down the cause. With all services off, the system boots normally – no hesitation or hang. I have narrowed the difficulty down to Windows Update. With that service set to Automatic, the system hangs after rebooting. However – with other services reset as before and Windows Update turned off, the system hangs again.
I do not have this issue in Safe Mode.
The system appears to have been getting all its updates from Microsoft.
Any ideas?
