vista: no audio output device is installed

I have a problem with my on board audio card Realtek running on windows vista home premium.
there is a Red X over my sound icon beside the clock with "no audio output device is installed" message.
I tried to reinstall the driver but the problem is still!
my computer is Toshiba Satellite u300
Any idea please help me...

Another thing to check first is

Open the Control Panel and then Sound Audio Devices and make sure that the Realtech Audio Device is selected here.

Sometimes with Windows when you install some Software this can become the Default Sound Device and can cause this to happen.

According to www.noaudiooutput.com you have a driver problem. I know you probably already updated your driver and it didn't work, (we all have). But check them out cuz there are different ways of doing it. Hey they saved my butt and now, I have sound :)

just uninstall and reinstall the driver

Go to device manager and click the button to uninstall the audio driver. Then click the buttton `scan for hardware changes`.
I had the same problem and it worked for me.
