Vista Password Problem

By craigandlori ·
I am attempting to fix a problem for a friend. She has a Dell Inspiron 1520 which had a white screen appear requesting a bios password, which she did not (could not) set. After fixing this issue Vista is now requesting a password at startup, she says she has never had one. She also does not have a reset disk created. What are my options??

other than: reinstall.

Our apologies, but:

We, the members of TechRepublic - A Resource for IT Professionals, will not assist anyone in the recovery/removal of lost passwords. You may have a legitimate reason to recover/remove a password. However, we cannot verify your motives and will therefore not assist anyone in what may be an attempt at gaining unauthorized access to a computer system. Due to the open nature of this forum, any assistance given to help circumvent security measures, even for legitimate purposes, would be available for unscrupulous individuals to use for illegitimate purposes. This is a risk that we, the members of TechRepublic, will not take. Please do not ask questions of this nature on TechRepublic.

If you have a legitimate need to circumvent a password scheme, please contact the vendor for the software / hardware and request their assistance. E.g. Windows XP password recovery/removal issues should be taken up with Microsoft's technical support, Phoenix BIOS password recovery/removal issues should be taken up with Phoenix Technologies, hard drive password recovery/removal should be taken up with the manufacturer of the hard drive, etc...

you say Vista is asking for a password

by Sue T In reply to Vista Password Problem

but you also say it is requesting the password at startup. Do you mean when you turn the computer on it asks for a password or do you mean you actually see a Vista logon screen? There is a big difference between these 2 passwords. if the first one then that means when you "fixed the problem" you actually set it to ask for a password when the computer is turned on so what you need to do is go in and fix it again or this time don't set it to ask for a password when the computer is turned on. If it is asking for the password at the vista logon screen well then that is an entirely different problem and the best advice I can give you would be to take it to a reputable computer repair shop to have the problem fixed as we do not give out answers to those type of problems because there is always a chance that it isn't your computer (at least legally).
