Vista to XP network problems

By morris ·
I had a three station XP network with a NAS attached that worked fine. I replaced one slow PC with a new Vista PC. The Vista PC can connect to the Internet via the Linksys SRX200 with a USB Linksys wireless adapter but the Vista PC does not see the other PCs. In fact, I cannot ping the Vista from the XP PCs and vice versa.
I have tried turning on all all sharing and have even turned off the firewall on the Vista.
Does anyone have any ideas?

Is the Vista Machine Public or Private?

In the Network and Sharing Center of Vista, you need to set the network type as "Home" or "Work" by clicking the "Customize" link located to the right of your network. These are considered private and will enable network discovery, file and print sharing, and will still keep the firewall on. (assuming you turn it back on). Have a look at for more information about issues with Vista.

Vista to XP network problem

Many thanks for your suggestion.
I customized by putting in "HOME" and that shows one of the XP PCs, in the network map, not both. The 2 XP PCs and the NAS see each other but not the Vista. The network map shown on the Vista is as follows: Vista line to Linksys (called "masco")and a line to gateway,XP PC#1 line to "switch", Line between Linksys and "Switch" I checked MS directions and have Link Layer Topology and Discovery Resonder checked.
I cannot left or right click on the XP PC or Switch icon. Any other ideas will be appreciated. I see you are an IT consultant. I am a marketing consultant in computer and

I have a similar issue

Brand new Vista Home Basic laptop. I use Network Magic software. I finally have been able to get Vista HB to SEE the other two XP systems shared folders but I can't open them. I have turned off the firewall as well.
