MFC42DEU.DLL is an MFC 4.2 DLL for German locale. You might have a localized application on the PC installed before Visual Studio 6.

I've experienced something very similar on a machine with German localization for Oracle client (which might be a bug in VS6 setup program). The resolution was just to install Visual Studio 6.0 first. Installing VS 6.0 right after you installed Win 98 before other applications might work for you also.

Greetings,

According to the Microsoft Knowledge Base articles Q160506 and Q160491, the file MFC42DEU.DLL was modified in what Microsoft calls the "VC42b Patch". I'd recommend you get this patch. I'm sure it's located on the Microsoft support page.

Good luck,

Maxwell
