I am running Win 98SE, after I installed my scanner I am only able to boot into Safe Mode. The error I get is:
VMM32 Missing or corrupted, unable to lead Windows. I have an Astra scanner.
Anyone have any suggestions as to what I should do to correct this problem???

Does your computer have a new processor? If so then some of the Astra scanner drivers are to slow for the newer processors and will corrupt Windows virtual memory manager.
I had this same problem after I got a new computer and added my older Astrascanner.
If you can get into the regular mode of Windows, go here:
http://www.umax.com/support/knowledge/solutionsSC.cfm?docs=SC00049

Download the patch for Vmm32.vxd error messages. And follow the directions on the web site.
The web site says the patch is for UMAX SCSI scanners, but it works for my scanner and I do not have a SCSI card.
Hope this helps.
Kathy

on it boots to safe mode is this:

VMM32.vxd is your 32bit virtual memory manager. Windows gateway to all your systems memory resources. Without this, windows is even more like DOS with cute pictures than before.

While in safe mode, you may need to uninstall your astra scanner completely,

Booting to safe mode-with network support, may provide you access to the internet in order to download the above mentioned patch.
