VNC through Verizon DSL

by lparker29 . Updated 18 years, 9 months ago

Trying to connect to my home PC through VNC. Have Verizon DSL and Westell 6100 modem. Works fine using my LAN but can’t connect from outside. Have configured the modem to forward port 5900 to the IP address of the computer I’m trying to reach. Using ShieldsUp at GRC.com, tells me port 5900 is open. If I stop the VNC service ShieldsUp says the port is closed. If I disable the port forwarding ShieldsUp says the port is Stealth. All as expected. Have also tried XP Remote Desktop, port 3389, same results. Used Wireshark to capture packets. I can see ShieldsUp hitting my PC on port 5900 when I ask it to probe that port. But if I try to make the VNC connection my PC is never hit with any port 5900 packets. Verizon and Westell support are a brickwall. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
