My IBM has had a similar issue with the Function keys but updating all my software refreshed it all.

Here is teh software download page for the VAIO VGN-S360, GUESSED at the exact model . But the sam page will allow you to look up YOUR exact model if need be.

Update everything, Chipset, BIOS, Video Drivers etc.

This will get the latest system updates in, which will usually overwrite any damaged or deleted files.

Another thing you can do is use the System File Checker utility, it will scan the system and replace any damaged or releted files too.

Assuming this is XP of course: Just go to the Run box on the Start Menu and type in:
sfc /scannow

If your operating system, is stored on the hard drive, it will extract any needed files from there. If it was installed from a CD, you should put the CD in teh drive so it can find teh files there.

Hello...

Those Fn + function key features are manipulating the hardware. They are not part of MS Windows. Reinstalling Windows will not have any effect on their operation.

I suggest you contact Sony for assistance with this. There is likely a hardware or firmware problem.

Let me know what the problem turned out to be. Thanks.

With most of these notebooks just reinstalling the keyboard drivers will cure your problem. They can become corrupted when you install some forms of software on the unit.

There is one other option that can adversely affect them and that is if you have been using an external keyboard and switched on the Number Lock or Scroll Lock this can cause the original keyboard to do all sorts of strange things so if that is the case the easy answer is to refit the external keyboard and just turn off the functions.

I hope that was of some help lets know how you get on.

The answer probably lies in Steve's and Colin's responses.

Yes, it is a hardware function, but key scan codes can be remapped by software. Re-installing Windows may fix the problem by removing whatever software or Windows setting that modified the scan codes.

Try booting from a bootable CD and see if brightness controls then work. If so, it is definitely a software issue.

what you need to do is visit the Sony web site and get the Hotkey utility , try to update always from the manufacture then from Micorosoft. This driver will fix and enable any FN key combination
