VPN Client

By asavelyev ·
Hi, can anybody help me to configure the client machines (mostly Win98 Sec Ed.). I configured a VPN with PPTP on NT Server and a client Win98 machine (I have entered IP address of the Server, user name, PW, our Network`s WINS Server`s IP address. From the Internet I can connect to my Network, it`s logging me in, I can "map" a share, but I can`t browse the Network as if I was inside. What is the problem? Will apreciate any help. Thanks,

I believe your 95/98 workgroup name should be the same as NT domain name.

see

for details and further references.

if you read on to Q150800, you will find that unless you use an LMHOSTS file on the remote pcs, you will not be able to browse properly even if you make the domain=workgroup.

If you can map a share using \\servername\sharename and access the share, then your VPN is configured properly and the problem is with the browser.

1. Make sure the workgroup name is the same as the domain name.
2. If you have 15 or more nodes in Network Neighborhood, this can also cause browsing problems over a slow data link. You may be better off mapping shares directly.
3. Recheck the TCP/IP settings on the client: make sure you have manually entered the WINS server address. Do not check the option for "Use DHCP for WINS resolution.
4. Consider installing NetBEUI on both the RAS server and clients. This is the most effective way to ensure a fully browsable LAN over a VPN connection.

Hope that helps.
