    VPN disconnecting frequently using 3Com

    Locked

    by davidn ·

I have recently created a VPN utilizing Microsoft VPN on Windows95 connecting over
ISDN lines at the remote sites and at SMDS T1 at the host site.
Over the past few weeks the VPN session gets locked up on the remote
side with an error 629. The Bell ISDN connection remains active on the
remote side, but the VPN session is dropped. This forces us to reboot
the remote PC and attempt a reconnect, which isn’t always successful.
On the host side we are ultimately connecting to an AS400 that has
standard OS400 applications as well as an NT partition for running the
Exchange server. The router on the host side is a 3Com Super Stack with
an internal DSU. We have swapped out the DSU and have run multiple
checks with Bell on the T1, neither have corrected the problem. The circuits
were up and running fine for 2-3 months before this problem occurred and
it’s happening consistently 4-6 times per day over the past 2 weeks at both
    remote sites. Any ideas??

Error 629, I think is “remote host ended connection”, or “Server did not respond to your request” (can remeber!).
You might want to look into the number of VPN you created and the number of simoutaneous connections into the server. How many simoutaneous connections do you get, how much bandwith each, your total output power. Also, the number of IP addresses available for VPN connection
95 machines do not do a very good job with VPN. There are many know issues about it. I bet you, 98 and NTWS machines are not presenting the same problem, right?
Make you disable the Browsing options on the clients side, if they have the Microsoft file and print sharing installed, otherwise you might end up with browsing problems (e.g. can’t find machines on the network, etc…).
If you have any control over router, check to see if there is a continuous connection option.

That is all I can think of. If you like reading, I have a site with tons of information about VPN and other technologies.

Is this just one PC getting locked up? Perhaps it has something to do with ISDN and it’s multilink capabilities: ISDN-Multilink is not enabled on the RAS server. Multilink needs to be enabled on both the RAS server and the RAS client. Otherwise, you’ll get that error 629 after the second ISDN channel attempts to come up..

What happens when you call your TA manufacturer and request a modem string to force a single channel connection?
