VPN doesn't support Internet browsing

By goodman ·
Currently, we have a number of field users with Windows 9x laptops connecting via dialup-VPN connections, with Cisco VPN client 3.x installed on each laptop.
Recently, we have received several Windows 2000 laptops, and although W2K has built-in VPNability, for purposes of continuity the Cisco client has been installed.
However, once connected via VPN, the user is unable to browse the Internet; if a specific address is entered a site can be reached, but names won't be recognized.
This would seem to indicate a problem with the DNS, but if that was the case, wouldn't it affect all users?
Windows 9.x users connect fine, only W2K (and XP)
users have the problem.
Any feedback would be appriciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Your 9x users may already be configures while the new users are not. Check their DNS data in the
Start-> Settings-> Network and DialUp Connections

Right-click on the network name and bring up the properties.
Select the IP/TCP option and click properties.
What are the settings for DNS? Are they "automatic"? Blank? Compare the win9x systems to the 2000/xp systems and make sure they are the same.
If all else fails, you can manually assign the IP for the DNS server in that properites box.

make sure the clients (esp. Win2k clients) are configured NOT to use the default gateway on the remote system, otherwise they'll try to use the VPN connection as the default route to the internet.

I use the same client and if I don't have the "Deterministic Network Enhancer" protocol or service bound in my network settings, I can't connect very well either. Open the network settings and make sure that's installed and there's a check mark in it. Also, try pinging the DNS servers when connected to make sure you're hitting them

Try running the DNS Client services in the Win2K services and set it to do this automatically.
