Vpn is it poss for 2 users on same IP?

By AWJackson ·
I have a Win2K Server in the office and am accessing it remotely. My internet connection is DSL and I'm using a Linksys Dsl Router to share the connection. Well I'm finding that when I connect a session from more than one machine, my connection fails. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can have more than one connection from the same shared internet IP?

It is abvouse hier that the configuration of the router is not good,Look in the configuration interface of the router self ,and in the DHCP server on the server.
1-you have to configure the Modem of the ADSL (I think you have doen this bcz you haveinternet connection).2-configure the Router with the good vlues and parometer for ip adress and dns ip adreses .3-in the dhcp server you have to add the(router and DNS server)as the folowing,from DHCP option :scope with their values (ip adreses).
and be sure it will work
success

I'm not sure if this answer is really any help. Mainly because it doesn't isolate the problem. Im not sure if it's actually the router or if it's server configuration. You refer to dhcp, but is only running on the remote side. And the router is acting as the DHCP server? Please offer additional info

Firstly you cannot have 2 IP's on a network that are the same. VPN is just a form of tunneling to your network from the internet or any other external/internal source.

If you want to Share an internet connection you can use Win2k's built in Internet connection sharing, that basically implements NAT technology. So you can have multiple PC's on a network using a single dial up to the internet.

Artical - Q237254 - How to Enable Internet Connection Sharing on a Network Connection, on Microsoft technets Knowledgebase explains in detail how it works and how to set it up.

The Win2K VPN server also is setup to give each connection its own local ip address ie is running dhcp for all vpn connections. I think your answer is really referring to outgoing from the server and that's actually accomplished, my problem actually involves the connecting and running of applications on the server. I may have misunderstood your response, and will bo to microsoft's page and read up on the article you've referenced

You question is vague, can you supply more information by answering the following;
>What model of Linksys are you using?
>Are you using the PPPoE Access Manager from the Linksys or is it an application on your server/workstation?
>What kind of connection are you attempting to do your test (HTTP)?
>Did you check your DHCP configuration on the Linksys?
>Did you check the DHCP information you got (on your server/workstation) from the Linksys?

If you answer these, i may get a better pictureof your problem and will be able to offer a better solution.

Waiting for your reply.

To my knowledge as of current, all Linksys routers offer the same configuration. And, my question is regarding connections from the same site (ie using the same internet ip address)to a Win2K server being utilized as a VPN server.

The Linksys DSL router has somewhat limited functionality so I can't say for sure for your particular setup, but it is possible (with the right equipment) to use one external IP address to support multiple inbound VPN connections and is particularlyeasy when the VPN tunnel terminates on the router itself.

In that case, you just use NAT and an IP address pool and everything is peachy.

If it turns out that this is not supported by the Linksys router, you might want to consider putting anold P100 computer into service as a Linux router with IPSec support. This can do exactly what you want with very little cost other than some configuration and tweaking time and the available support has been excellent. You can find more info at leaf.sourceforge.net

Can you offer a little more information regarding this? The understanding I'm having is that the remote side may be my problem?

I'm sorry, misread the original question. I found the following in the DSL/Cable Modem router user guide, it may provide you with an answer;

"from multicasting. Using IPSec Pass Through
? This feature lets you use IPSec Pass Through. To use this feature, click on the
IP Filters block specific internal users from accessing the Internet and enable
VPN (Virtual Private Network) sessions. You can set up filters by using IP
addresses or network port numbers (or a range of ports).

Note: : Only oneVPN session may be conducted at a time."

Good luck
