VPN Oflline file sync issues

By morneh ·
Hi all

I have a customer who lives in Germany, his offices are based in Johannesburg South Africa..
We set up offline files for him before he went back and all synchronised ok on Win XP, server is Win 2003. i am currently connected to his desktop through some remote software, the VPN connection fires up ok and connect no problem. I can see his connection through Routing and remote acces in admin tools.
When i try run a sync it prompts for authentication. Entering his details i get the error "Logon uncucessful- the user name you typed is the same as the user name you logged in with. That user name has already been tried. a domain controller cannot be found to verify that user name"

I tried useing the local admin account and i moaned about dual credentials.
I can ping the server from his machine, no joy synchronizing.

Any help would be appreciated

Is he able to connect to network resources?
It could be a dns resolution issue.
is it a domain laptop?
Is the domain name spelled correctly?
If it is not a domain laptop, has all the server/ip information been added to the hosts file?

Probable fix

The problem you describe is very similar to one I experienced with our vpn users.
By default kerberos uses udp for communication. Over the vpn the udp packets can be lost or recieved out of order so authentication fails. To fix you can force kerberos to use TCP.
Follow the steps in this Microsoft article:

Password experation could be an issue. The DC might want a new password before the account can be authenticated.
