Can you setup a VPN client on a computer using a DSL connection to the internet? What are the good/bad points?

Why wouldn't you be able to? Theoretically, all you need is 2 peer devices that can get to eachother to deploy a VPN solution. The matter in which they get to eachother physically, really is of no concern (other then configuration).

You sure can. The only gotcha is if there is a firewall between you and the VPN server; then you have some tweaking to do.

The good point is that you then have an encrypted connection to your company network with much better performance than by dialup.

The bad points are that as long as the VPN connection is established, all your Internet traffic now goes through the VPN tunnel and that can have implications for monitoring and performance. Also, if your DSL is always on and the VPN connection is always established, someone could compromise your machine and use it to compromise the corporate network. This is less of a risk when a firewall is in place on the DSL connection.
