VPN on win2k3 1 nic

By davidf ·
My question is, how do you configure a VPN if you have only 1 nic? Windows says that you have to select the custom configuration option, however I do not get the normal questions through the wizzard such as which IP address to assign etc.

with 1 NIC, best to use an Endpoint router where the router maintains the tunnel. To much to go wrong configuring RRAS and DHCP relay using 1 NIC.

What would I setup on the server to use the router? Would the server just have to see the router and set the router up with the vpn? Sorry, it is still a bit unclear.

well RRAS has to establish a connection with the client, create and maintain the tunnel and allow data to pass back and forth in the tunnel. RRAS can be configured with however many miniports for PPTP and L2TP connections you want and control the security for connections.

With an endpoint router, the router establishes and maintains the tunnel and provides security authentication for VPN clients. This is a far more secure environment instead of having to allow external clients be fowarded from the perimeter firewall into the LAN network server that hosts RRAS. There are many makes of routers that provide VPN capabilities. The Sonicwall TZ 170 and their Global VPN client, Symantec 320, Linksys, Netgear, D-Link have VPN Endpoint routers and the faithful but expensive Cisco as well.

Update - 2 nics - 1 to the internet and specified as my nic for RRAS.

I try to connect and it responds back that server did not answer. Does the server have to be a domain controller ie (DHCP, AD, DNS) for this to work?

I created the VPN the same way it says to in the article on this site where you specify the ip range, etc on another server that I promoted to a DC and the VPN connects, but on the server that is not a DC it doesn't.
