Hello,
I work for a POS company and I’ve been tasked to revitalize the IT infrastructure, you could say.
I’m looking to implement a VPN server/network drive to provide secure connections to POS devices (as many as a few hundred), to say push updates, transfer data, but also be able to easily provide support to end users in the form of taking over the unit to solve a problem.
So I was thinking of using something like UltraVNC over a VPN server to provide that support, maybe in conjunction with Active Directory (there is a defunct windows nt pdc acting as a file server for the office workers at the moment, so there really isn’t a domain, right now) to manage the connections.
Would win2k3 AD make it easer? What kind of hardware would I need? Quad core? Roughly how much ram would I need? Should I use two nics and load balance? Is there something to consider that I may be missing? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
