VPN Setup in NT 4.0

By rsartain ·
Does anyone know of any special issues regarding VPN setup in NT4.0 that are not covered in the Microsoft whitpaers. I have downloaded the papers and followed all the steps as a client and yet cannot connect to a remote server that has been used by Windows 98 and 95 clients for over a year. RAM, ROM, and RAS are not the issues. Ports are configured. We're using an Alta Vista firewall and punched a hole in it according to suggested number and guidelines

VPN Setup in NT 4.0

Several things I've come across with MS VPN
windows 98SE needs a dun patch to work. Make sure the Dun on the client side is set up to nt c/r authentication. When you DO get a connection don't try browsing to the server use net use f: \\ipaddress\sharename and see if that works there are some registry settings that change the timeout value for the browser when connected thru VPN
(for dial up) Turn auditing on for logon/logoff and keep an eye on the event log to see where exactly it's failing.
Good luck
Mike

Thanks Mike but this question was posted with specific regard to NT4.0. Anything else is irrelevant

Technet and Knowledge Base can sometimes make you want to pull your hair out. When I set up our VPN, I gave up on MS sites and went third party. There are too many issues to list here, but WWW.WIN2000MAG.com has great articles on how to set up a VPN. Use the seperate keywords of RAS, RRAS, VPN, and PPTP, and you will find some useful articles with step-by-step instructions on how to set up a VPN on both the client and server side. You may have to browse a few pages to get to WinNT/9x setup,as the most recent articles are probably regarding Windows 2000.

After many tries to configure and to run VPN under NT (using PPTP) on a PDC, we install it on a 'fresh' computer (NT stand alone) and all works perfectly.

Note that your ISP (and firewall) must accept ... (damned I don't remember the correct term) GRP or GRE packet or something like that.

Check the doc.

Good luck.

Thanks Pascal but this wasn't specific enough. We already had a standalone setup that still doesn't work.
