    VPN Solution?

    Locked

    by bladedthoth ·

I am currently working with a company to move over from their costly ISDN network to another solution. Currently they have 2 remote offices and the central office, and possibly expanding. They wish to go for DSL and use VPN. They currenly run Novell 3.1 over ISDN with their accounting files and important documents saved and backed up at the central office server, and ran directly from there. They currently pay over $800+ a month plus constant service fees to maintain their network. Remote centers have 1 computer each, and both will be expanding, and central office has 7 computers. Would 3 hardware VPN routers using PPTP be the most price-effective method for doing this across the internet, or another option? They wish to stay with Novell for now, with the option of moving on to a Windows 2000 Server down the road. (Opinions accepted)

I cannot confirm this, but I believe that Cisco has a VPN client that you load on a PC. If this is so, you won’t have to buy the VPN routers for the single PC sites until you grow.

I know that Nortel has such a client, but it was a pain to integrate with their router/firewall at the main site.

      gotcha #1
I believe that you will need a novell network address for each VPN WAN link.

      gotcha #2
limit SAP updates if you have morethan a few servers.

Yeah, I don’t think the PC VPN software solution is good. He will need to connect the entire offices together, so VPN routers IS a good idea. Just remember that they will need to support IPX, unless they are using TCP/IP for NetWare.

BTW, Winblows comes with a free VPN/PPTP client…
