VPN Windows XP Problem

By davidmd ·
I have a VPN server at work with the VPN NIC assigned an IP from my ISP. When I connect to the VPN using Windows 2000 is works fine. When I try to connect using Windows XP I discovered when I sniffed the connection that the Source IP for the GRE packets from the server is the IP of the Gateway/Router at work supplied by my ISP. When I sniffed the Windows 2K VPN connection the source IP for the GRE packets is the IP address of the VPN adapter therefore it works. As the source IP on the Windows XP machine is the Router/Gateway then the GRE packets are dropped so the VPN connection does not work. Why should the source IP of the GRE packets be identified incorrectly as the Router/Gateway IP and not the VPN adapter IP?
