'W' application prevents server reboot.

By eb4free ·
On several remote servers, I have scheduled automatic shutdown and reboot tasks every Sunday evening. Occasionally, the reboot fails and hangs on an application simply titled "W". I've searched high and low, but can't figure out what this darn "W"application is and why it is causing my reboot to stall. After I End Task several times, the reboot continues but the Event Viewer has nothing to show. I can email screen prints of this actual problem to anyone who can help. I'm running NT 4.0, SP4.

Are you sure is an application and not a connection to other resources. In any case you can search the services and try closing down the services with a batch or script to prevent it from hanging. The resource kit has several apps to do just so. Good luck.

I already have a batch file to shutdown most of the services before rebooting. If I didn't, the reboot would take a very long time.

Are you running PCAnywhere or another type of Remote Control software. I've had PCAnywhere display similar messages when trying to have a server reboot.

Yes, I am running Remotely Possible (now called ControlIT), but I my batch file stops all related services before attempting a shutdown.

Hi,

I am not sure if you are using shutdown util from resource kit.

If you are, did you use /c switch to force all running apps to close? If one application is hanging (say it is still busy during the timeout period that NT allows for each appto close during a shutdown, I don't remember exactly how long though), only /c can force it to close. That might not even do it sometimes.

Try it with /c switch if you haven't already. Also with /y switch. Just to see if it does it.

If you have, you email me screen print and I will see whether I can help. No promises but a helpful fellow here though.

Hope that helps.

This didn't help, but thanks for trying. I tried your email address, but it was kicked back to me. Zawzmoo@earthlink.net, right?

Have you updated your virus software? Try it and do a full scan. You may also want to try it from another virus program than you usually use, sometimes they find something your primary system may have missed.

My anti-virus software is always current since we push the updates from our corporate office. Thanks for trying to help, though.
