W2K admin password&Novell user password

By sharris ·
I am setting up W2KP boxes in a Novell 4.11 environment. I cant seem to find a solution to the client login of a user and the admin login for the local W2K box. I would like to have the admin password different from the users password when they login. The only work around I can come up with is creating another user having admin rights and make the client/admin account have the same password to avoid a double login? Any ideas????

The Novell client contains a module called Workstation Manager. If configured correctly (takes time but not THAT difficult) it will
- Take the network login as leading
- Create a local account with equivalent rights (so admin if needed) ON THE FLY
- Delete that account from the local SAM upon logoff, if you wish.

So with this, you don't need to configure an extra local account anymore. Just have the network accounts for user and admin, that's it.

At your service,

You can install ZENworks into your NetWare systems and use it to create Dynamic Local Users (DLU). This way will allow you to deploy NT or 2000 workstations with only the default users from the install. When a user logs onto the NetWare system, itthen sees that you are running an NT/2000 box and creates a local user. The trick is to determine ahead of time what local groups you want the DLU to be a part of on the local machine. Administrator is not good, Power Users are better, but still not the best. But with this you can use whatever group or groups you decide.

I think what you were thinking about doing is actually the best way of handling it. I have created a God user on my Novell network called Administrator, and have made it a trustee of the root (NOT equal to admin). So, when I log into an NT/2K workstation as administrator, I pick up admin rights to the workstation AND to the network.

I also create a Netware user to match the local NT/2K user name, as per normal procedure. Be careful with the rights situation on 2K, though. We have had trouble with users being unable to perform some routine tasks (such as installing software if you have a loose policy on this) unless they are admins, too. You might want to play with workstation rights til you find a happy medium there.
