W2K and Samba Server

By brainerd ·
Recently, I started running W2K on my workstation at the office. The office is networked through a UNIX box running Samba. I cannot log into that server. The exact error message I get is: "The filename, directory, or volume label syntax is incorrect.". I have talked to the admin about this and he says there is nothing he can do. I would love to tell you what version of Samba the box is running, but I have no clue. The rest of the office is running Win98 machines. I have even gone to the Samba page to try to find and answer but with no luck. So any idea?

1.Try in regedit on win2k:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanWorkStation\Parameters]

"EnablePlainTextPassword"=dword:00000001

2.If 1. doesn't work, tell the admin to upgrade the version of SAMBA he's using.

Can you see the samba server in network neighborhood? First you should try to ping the samba server from your Windows 2000 computer. Then try pinging your windows machine from the samba server. If they ping each other ok than its a samba configuration problem. Make sure the IP of the samba server is entered under the WINS tab in network properties in Win 2000. Try enabling encrypt passwords in the samba.conf file(usually in /etc). Also make sure that if there is a host allow or host deny optionused that the ip of the windows 2000 computer is in host allow and not host deny.
Last try to "find" the samba server by going to find computer and entering the name or IP of the Samba server.

Hope this helps
