W2K/Compaq 1GHZ machine does not see mou

By razzadaz ·
Installing Kensington Orbit Trackball with latest driver from manufacturer, on a Compaq 1GHZ Deskpro EN with Nvidia video driver. Blue screens after installation. Works fine on a Compaq 400GHZ machine with W2K. Have tried all traditional methods. Suggestions?

I assume you have the latest CD from COMPAQ, plus I assume that since you mentioned the Nvidia Video, that is the driver that is cited on the BSOD.
The first place to check is that this is not the "classic" COM4 conflict.
Check the resources of the Video, it is may be using the 02E8 I/O address.
If it is, in Device Manager, lock out this address, or Manually force the Resources of the Mouse away from this address before you reboot.
(This is also another way to find the problem.)
Install the Mouse, and do not reboot.
Instead go into the device manager and display the resources of the mouse.
There will be a Warning Notice about a Resource Conflict.
Select Manual, and try the configurations, and changes to the configurations, until the conflict can be eliminated.
Regards, Chris

Thanks for the suggestions and I apologize for taking so long to try them but first of all there appears to be no conflict that device manager recognizes, also can't install mouseware without restarting because device manager doesn't recognize the device, so there are no messages reporting a conflict. The blue screen flashes by quickly so I can't copy the final files where it stopped.

The 1st answer is excellent, this is a Compaq, make sure you have the latest Flash for the machine (Bios)or any other flash's that may be availabe. They are available at the Compaq site. Do you have this problem w/ the original mouse? If so, hardware wise, it may be the sys board.
Armand.
