w2k crashes

By Seadogs ·
I have a machine that explorer is crashing on. It is a new pc that has been in use for about a week. Running w2k sp2. Pretty much as soon as you get into explorer either by right clicking on start or if you go through my documents it hangs up andhas to be killed through task manager. Another strange thing is that disk cleanup freezes while looking for directories to delete. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this and how to fix? Thanks!

w2k crashes

I had the same thing happen to mine and it was because I was infected with the Nimda virus. I went to http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.nimda.a@mm.html and downloaded the Nimda removal tool and once it was done, I had 346 files infected and this tool cleaned them our for me. Since then, no problems. Hope this helps, Jeremy

upgrade to the lastest internet explorer and then go to windows update and download all new security patches and updates. reboot. Disk cleanup also seems to hang but if you let it run for 20 mins or more it will finish. I have had one machine thattook 1 hour to complete searching. Ie is more then likely causing the problems with explorer.
