W2k disables printer port due to errors?

Can anyone clarify on this issue. I was told by someone that win2000 disables printer ports which have low toner, out of paper or not pingable errors and the spooler has to be restarted before those printers are able to print again. Anyway of disabling this feature or fix to this ‘bug’/problem?

    Thanks in advance!

I work for a copier/printer firm so i have used and set up many printers on Win2000. I have never come across windows disabling ports.

My guess is that the print driver that whoever told you about this has had a driver that has crashed. This could be because of a toner/paper/not pingable error. This could have caused the spooler service to crash, in which case it would need a restart.

Obviously drivers vary across machines but i have installed and used ‘bi-directional drivers’ (They report toner left etc) many times and never had Win2000 shut anything down. Try refering to the printers website if this is a problem you are experiencing.

      Hope this helps
