W2K domain controller

By jim ·
I have attempted to upgrade my NT4 PDC to Win2000. I believe the upgrade was sucessful with the exception of DNS. My question is: Does the NT4 BDC still give me any protection if the W2K domain controller goes offline? Name resolution seems slower than on the NT4 is this common? I don't always see all the computers that are attached to the domain.

Jim, your Windows 2000 domain controler is acting as a 4.0 PDC emulator, it treats the BDC's as such. Your downlevel clients should be able to authenticate with the BDC's or the PDC. In fact, you could take the new PDC down, promote one of your BDC's to a PDC and with the exception of some new groups, you would be just as you were before you moved to a mixed mode. As far as name resolution, Im not sure if your talking DNS name resolution or netbios name resolution. Your still going to need WINSrunning, at least until you get rid of every legacy client. I hope I was helpful, email me if you have more questions. Have a Great day!

Pete
