W2K Modem Disconnects

I have a W2K pc with an external USR 56K modem on Com1. Sometimes it will work and the next time I boot the PC it says the modem is not detected or connected to the Com port. This is getting annoying when I have to uninstall the modem and re-install it to get it to work for a day. Does anyone have any suggestions?
