W2K Not Printing From CMD or DOS Progs

By nsceml ·
A Dell machine with DOS accounting software and a local printer will not print from the command prompt Ex:(dir> lpt1)or from DOS programs. Prints fine in windows. I have tried a dot matrix and a brand new Epson C82 with a new parallel cable. On the phone with epson and the software tech support people and all of us are stumped. Software is correctly installed and running OK except for the ability to print. And trying to print a dir command from the command line doesn't even make the printer twitch. I am satisfied that this is not an issue with the printer or the software. Maybe someone has an idea or something to try.

In order to print through DOS on a Windows 2000 machine you need to do the following. 1st in Windows 2000 you will need to share the printer. Go to the printer properties and then select the sharing tab. Make a note of what you call the share name for the printer. After you have done this go into DOS and type the following cmd net use lpt1: \\machine name\printer share name now you can print through DOS in the normal way. This will only work while you are in that particular instance of DOS onceyou come out of this DOS prompt you will need to do this same command again.
