w2k pro continually installing devices

By Manfre ·
I've got a win2k pro sp1 machine that prompts me to reboot whenever i logon. It says that it has finished installing new devices and should be restarted. It has done this ever since i did a fresh install about 3 days ago. I checked the device manager and it never shows any new devices because everything was found perfectly on install. Any ideas on why this could happen every reboot?

I would format the drive and do a fresh install of W2000, we have done quite afew installs and had no problems with any workstations except W2k doesn't always pickup some of the drivers.

This continued to happened after I reformed for the second time. Then I posted this question. All devices are working properly and installed (according to device manager).

Hmmmm I have had a similar problem with a win2k installation that was working fine, until I installed the lastest drivers from via for the hard drives and the agp, there was nothing that I could do and the installation was totally hosed, It got to the point where it would install it and blue screen right after that......your best bet would be to reinstall windows and keep a watch out for what drivers you install....The mother board I was using was an MSI.

have you checked the device manager in safe mode? if so does it show multiple copies of devices and which ones?

im assuming that device manager has no conflicts.

Rather than reinstalling which may or may not solve the problem (more than likelynot) try removing all devices in device manager, and starting the hardware detection again (this also may or may not work, but it is worth trying) update drivers on all devices that you can, and check your motherboard manufacturer's website for biosupdates, there may be a known problem that has been fixed in a bios update.
Good luck

I did this before you posted, and it partially fixed the problem. Now it only happens every so often. That's good enough for now. Thanks for all the responses.
