W2k Pro – motherboard upgrade questions

by cvjack . Updated 24 years ago

Hello,

I’m trying to get some preliminary info and opinions about upgrading one of my systems. It’s an ASUS/PII-300/256MB with all the standard devices running W2k Pro. Runs great but it’s slow. I’d like to upgrade to an Athlon 750 and have to change the motherboard to do it. My question is, how do I get W2k to detect the new moboard and load the correct drivers? I’ve already hooked up the new 750 mobo temporarily and W2k just gives the blue STOP screen of death. I booted to the W2k Pro CD and attempted all the repair options with no luck. Also tried reloading W2k and it craps out telling me my hard drive is corrupt. Some history: this system was originally running W98SE and was upgraded about four months ago to W2k Pro. All went well except for a couple of drivers I had to find and load. Since then it’s been running fine but slow. The Athlon 750 mobo is one that I’d been using in another system with no problems. I’m primarily a hardware guy and don’t pretend to know much about W2k. The majority of my customers still use Win98SE so that’s what I know. But, it seems to me that there should be a way to upgrade a motherboard without having to reformat and reload W2k(never had problems doing this with Win9x). I’ve checked out the MS website/knowledgebase for any info about what I’m trying to do but found nothing. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx,
Jack
