W2k shared printer on NT server

By edudley ·
I have a W2k pro pc that has a shared printer. I am needing the set that up on my NT 4.0 server. The printer is an HP deskjet 720c. Each time I try to set it up on the NT 4.0 server it say that it does not have the proper driver. If I use the original install disk for the NT server it tries to load the drivers locally. I can not find the *.inf files that the server wants any other way.

Have you tried downloading the most recent drivers from the HP website?

not exactly sure what you are asking but did you try adding the NT4 printer driver to the hpdj720c share on the w2kpro? get printer properties, pick share, then Additional Drivers...

1:download the nt drivers from the hp website
or 2: install the printer locally on the nt server, then change the port to the shared name (\\computername\sharedprintername) of the w2k pro pc.

Delete the printer driver off of your Win2K pro machine...

Goto HP and download the 720C driver for NT... Install that printer / driver on the Win2k machine. Now share it. Works wonderfully huh? )

WinNT drivers use the same files for 2K. 2K drivers are not backwards compatible with NT.

Each PC does load the drivers it needs locally. That's how it works. You can tell the Server to load additional platform drivers so the workstations can get them when accessing. You simply share the printer on the server even if it's connected physically to the W2K pro pc. The W2K Pro PC will load the W2K Drivers, NT4 the NT4 Drivers, and 98 will load 98 Drivers. All locally. The network path is the only difference.

You can also load the drivers as you described and then goto the properties locally, details, and change the path from LPT1 to the network path.

Install the NT4 drivers on the server and share the printer. On the 2000 boxes install the printer as a local printer using UNC with the 2000 drivers added. Printers are not backwards compatible. A good place to store the drivers is to create a 2000 directory and copy them to it on the server for all users.
