W2K VPN Clients cant browse W2K network

By astrarich ·
We have a native Windows 2000 network with W2K clients.
A RRAS server has been configured as a VPN server to allow incoming connections across the internet.
VPN Clients can connect but are unable to browse for any network resources including searching for the office domain computers
VPN clients pick up IP address from DHCP. Have configured VPN clients with static DNS server IP address.
How do I allow VPN clients to browse the office network?
Thanks in advance

W2K VPN Clients cant browse W2K network

Make sure that in each client's vpn connection (on their end) they're using Client for Microsoft Networks. Also, are they able to ping any computers on the network? Try it by IP and then by name. If IP works, and pinging by name doesn't, then it's a DNS issue.

If pinging by IP doesn't work, it's a networking component that's the issue. At least this will help to narrow down the problem.

Also, have the clients look at their Event viewer, and look in the Event viewer on the server as well for further clues.

Thanks for your reply quintar51

All clients have 'Client for Microsoft Networks' installed by default.
VPN clients can ping computers on the network by name and IP address.
I have also opened up TCP and UDP ports 53 (DNS) on the firewall.
VPNClients can map drives to network resources.
But VPN clients still cannot browse the network through 'My Network Places'
This question remains open.

What exactly happens when they try to browse the network?

W2K VPN Clients cant browse W2K network

When the VPN clients connect and try to browse the network through 'My Network Places' they only see the local workgroup where they are actually located, they cannot see the domain that they have VPN'd into, which means they cannot see any domain machines or network printers. In one scenerio for instance, the sales rep has two PC's networked in a workgroup at home with an ADSL router and switch and no firewall. We can establish a VPN connection to the RRAS server in the office, which is also the DC for the office domain. When we try to browse the network we can see the local workgroup but not the office domain. We can connect to the office computers (i.e. \\officecomputername\ ) and browse the shares etc. But we want all VPN users to browse the network through 'My Network Places' as its easier and quicker for them.
All VPN clients are running either Windows 2K Pro or XP. The Office network is native W2K with W2K Pro Clients.
Thanks in advance.

Well, if the clients can browse shares by using the UNC path, then everything is working. Perhaps it's just a matter of time of the domain showing up in My Network Places. In the meantime, perhaps you can map some network drives to the clients so they can connect to it quickly.

netbios broadcasts are probably not making it throgh the VPN. Maybe you want to have WINS running.

Don't need WINS as using DNS. Node type = hybrid as trying to reduce broadcast traffic.
Anyhow I have solved the problem, in lies in static routes which are configure on the RRAS Server. Here is a link which may help to explain:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/deploy/confeat/vpnscen.asp

Static rout configured for the WAN adapter. It all works fine now.
