I have a Windows 98 machine running Norton Anitvirus 5.0. Unfortunately the virus definitions were two years old. I downloaded the latest defs from Symantecs web site.
After this the Antivirus software recognised the existance of this virus. It could not remove it so I followed the steps on their website at www.sarc.som for the special removal utility. Instructions were followed word for word.
I then rebooted the machine and it asked for a system disk. I assume it has done something horribleto the bootsector. I use a Win98 boot disk and look at the c-drive. The message comes up “Invalid Media Type Reading drive c”.
So it has removed/destroyed the FAT’s as well.
So I run FDISK /MBR and this doens’t work either.
They really need the data off this machine.
All of the utilities I have found are Windows utilities. I need a Dos utility to restore the FAT (and data) and the virus (if it isn’t already gone!!).
Is this possible as I really need some data on this machine?? Remember that the FAT’s aren’t there at the moment so it is a big problem.
