W98 Hangs at Startup due to a registry k

By bgates ·
Hey,

I have a problem with my W98 machine. I remeber seeing the solution posted earlier in a TechProTip, however I would like someone to remind me what registry key causes Windows to try to connect to the Internet at (or before?) startup. This crashes my machine.

Thanks!

Boot into safe mode by hitting F8 while booting and choosing safe mode from the start menu.

Once in safe mode click on start, then run.
Type msconfig and click ok.
Choose selective startup and uncheck the box for startup group items, apply, andrestart the system.
If the problem does not happen then you can go into msconfig, open the startup tab, and add a few programs at a time until you find out what is causing the issue.
Besides that there is HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run (runservices, runonce, runonceex, and runservicesonce).
There is also 'run=' and 'load=' under windows of win.ini.

No need to edit the registry: open IE5 and go to TOOLS/INTERNET OPTIONS/CONNECTIONS. Click the radio button that says "Never dial a connection", then APPLY and OK. Win98 will update the registry for you and wait for you to initiate dial-up.
