W98SE booting up in safe mode only

By pmfturner ·
An hour after my PC (Plll, Intel CA810E
motherboard, 160Mb RAM) was working, I
switched it back on only to be able to operate
in safe mode. After trying various things in the
troubleshooter, I decided it was time to have a
clear out anyway, and re-format the hard drive.
This I did, re-installed Win98SE, and same
again, can only operate in safe mode. I've re-
formatted and re-installed W98SE a second
time, just to be sure, to be sure, but no
change !
Any suggestiuons as to what has happened,
or what I am doing wrong ?

This has to be HW problem.

The first thing I recommend is to do HD diagnostic test. Download a diagnostic utility program from the HD manufacturer?s website and run it. If the test failed, replace the HD.

If this does not resolve the problem, test your RAM.
Do MS OCA test (http://tinyurl.com/qoy4) or MEM86 test (http://www.memtest86.com).

If you still have the problem, test your Power supply, CPU, and then MB. You have to have at least two known good replacements to find the culprit. If you do not, take your system to a local reputable service place.

Another option is to buy a new system.

You did not mention whether you had installed any SW. If yoy had, uninstall all to isolate the cause (SW vs HW).

I had similar problems with 98SE.

After many unsuccessful re-builds & Re-installs, i opted for a new HD which solved the problem.

Although i don't beleive for one second it was the HD, i replaced in anyway in favour of more storage.

If Windows 98 starts in Safe mode, step through the startup process to see if any devices do not load properly: 1. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Click Selective Startup.

a. Click Start, click Run, type msconfig in the Open box type, and then click OK.
b. Click the Win.ini tab.
c. Double-click the Windows folder.
d. Click to clear the load= and run= check boxes.
e. Click OK.

If you are still unable to start Windows 98 normally, use the System File Checker tool to check for damaged or replaced system files. To start System File Checker, click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, click System Information, and then click System File Checker on the Tools menu.
