W98SE hangs on boot in IBM ThinkPad A20m

I have an IBM ThinkPad A20m in which I decided to install Win98SE in Spanish from the bottom (formatting the disk, etc). Everything work fine till I decided to install a PCMCIA network adapter in one of the ThinkPad PC Card slots. Win 98 hangs on boot when restarting after the NIC drivers installation. I guess that is something related with the PCMCIA slots drivers (Texas Instruments PCI-1420), because W98 only installed the 2 PCMCIA controllers and not the PCMCIA card services. My first question is: That means that W98 is not using 32-bit protected mode drivers to handle the PC card slots? and the second, of course: How can I stop using the real mode drivers and install the protected mode ones and the PCMCIA card services? Thanks in advance.

I beleive the drivers you should have on that should be the 1450, not the 1420. MOst IBMs I’ve seen require a special INF from IBM. I’ve never specifically setup the one you have names, but the 5 other types all required this. Normally it’s part of the config CD, but their support library says if you don’t have that, copy the windows cabs over to a local directory on the hard drive, and copy the INFs over to the same directory and then run setup from there. This file isn’t very big and should be able to fit on a floppy, even after unzipping.

They also have example device manager setups no there, to give you an idea of what your hardware config is supposed to be. Pretty good to act as a starting point for your hardware config.

      Good luck to you

Here at IBM Learning Services Portugal we usualy have the same problem.
Run windows in safe mode then open the control pannel and chose Networking.
Now change some settings like the computer description or remove one protocol and reboot.
If windows still hangs up, make sure your drivers are compatible with the spanhish version of windows, because if they aren’t windows may hang-up.

Likely this is not the problem , but it very well could be, the configuration may have caused a shift in allotments , and the sound card , if it had a sound enabled for startup would cause a hang right at the last screen , use safe mode to go to thecontrol panel and turn off the startup sound , then restart.
