We have a computer that was used by someone who was dismissed for using the 'net to view inappropriate material. Somehow whenever the computer reboots, it resets the home page on Internet Explorer to an inappropriate site. I have tried manually editing the register, but it seems to go back to the undesireable keys upon re-boot. It will not however if you start-up in "safe mode". This leads me to conlude that there is something imbeded in the startup routine. Is there any way to isolate theoffending line short of rebooting several times in step mode guessing which lines not to run?

I would search for .vbs and java script files on the subject hard drive.

That is most likely what is doing it.

Also, double check the all of the run and runonce sections of the registry.

If you are running W98 or Me, you could run MSconfig, and look over the startup items.

You could also try Lava-softs AdAware, as this is a type of adware.

You may have to uninstall IE, search out and remove the scripts, then re-install IE.

Happy Hunting.

Check the registry and look in HKLM\Spftware\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run, RunOnce and RunOnceEx for anything funky.

Also check the Startup folder, and look at the load= and run= lines in Win.ini.

You could also run msconfig and scan the Startup tab for rogue programs. Or try Startup Cop, it'll scan your system for everything loading at startup, and it's free.

try ctrl+alt+del and end task on each program that may be loadng form the registry and also the system.ini file and start menu, from there if you cant' find it then I would recommend that you wipe the hard drive and reinstall everything since who knows what else they have had on that computer.
