Want to re-sort Exchange GAL Last, First

We are a company of under 50 employees, but growing and want to change how the Global Address List is sorted. Now it’s First, Last, but we want to change to Last, First. Is there an easy way to do this? Will typing in ‘Janet’ still resolve to the only Janet we have at our company, or will it look first by last name?

My recommended why is to do an Exchange directory export. You will find this under the tools menu in the Exchange Admin program. Once exported use Excel to edit the export file (its a comma delimited file). Edit the Display Name column with the new format. Once done Import the file back into the directory. (Import is also found in the Tools menu).
Typing ‘Janet’ will still resolve to the only Janet even thought it is last, first.
You will also want to change your default Display Name generation to Last, First, by setting it in Tools|Options in Exchange Admin.

This was helpful, but I still have a problem. I compose an email, and in the ‘To:’ box I type Janet; Travis; Jim; Debbie; Patty; Neil; Dan

Only about half of them resolve correctly. Each of them has their First and Last name fields filled in correctly, and their display names are all Last, First now. Any other ideas?

Now it’s all Last, First, but some first names don’t resolve. All last names do, but about half of the first names will. Any ideas?

Try removing the OAB from services, then add it back in.

The problems resolving “Joe; Mary; John” is a separate problem from the “Last, First” thing. This new problem involves “ANR” or Ambiguous Name Resolution…

To solve this problem, set the “Alias” field for each user to “Joe” or “Mary” or “John”. Note that using this as an alias will not really be architecturally scalable.. because in 2-3 years you might have 3 “John”s or “Mary”s.. but if this is what you want right now then do it.

By the way, you can change the “Alias” field down the road if you need to.. so don’t fret about it too much.

Thanks, that helps, but we have a problem with Outlook Web Access, I believe, if we change everyone’s alias. Also, as you said, we’re eventually going to have lots of duplicate first names. Sounds like we just have to get in the habit of typing in First Name and Last Initial.
