Watercooler - Saw a concert

On Friday night, a friend and I took a bit of a road trip to see a band. We saw a Grateful Dead tribute band called Dark Star Orchestra. Now these guys did a real nice job. They were technically very good, and while they didn't try to look like the Dead, and they jammed really well, it struck me as kind of sad.

There were about 2,000 people in the bar, many were jammed up front near the stage dancing around and singing just like it used to be at Dead shows. There were even a lot of young people. It just seemed to me that most of them were trying to fake it. That they were trying to force some vibe that really wasn't there, at least not for me. I was in a balcony above and had a next bird's eye view of the stage.

Before the show, we were in a pub next door and my friend recognized a couple of members of the band. As we were leaving, I found myself standing next to one and I asked how many shows they do a year. She told me that they were on number 187 this year. So obviously these folks can make a decent living doing this.

Well, pointless ramble, but I still had a good time and the beer was good. I had a few Magic Hats - a Vermont local brew.

I like pointless ramblings on a Monday morning..

We've been trying to get out of town every weekend since this whole strike business started. On Saturday, we took the little one to Cleveland to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They had a Clash exhibit going on. Both the husband and the child enjoyed it a great deal. On the way home, I got a little retail therapy, so we were all happy.

Four days and I'll have 11 days off. I can hardly wait.

Everyone wants to play the game

Many that missed the daze of being a deadhead, and this is their only chance.

How would many know the right vib to put out? Especially as, if I recall correctly, most dead concerts were outside events? Can't get that same atmosphere inside, when it is cold out. cool to try though.

I have seen different tribute bands, for the Beatles, Kiss, Ozzy, and others. Most spend more time on what they look like than what they sound like, hoping the audiance will be too geeked and stoned to care about the music. The beatles was very well done though.

Balconies are great for watching the show, but most places I have seen, the speakers are not focused that way, so you don't get the same rumble. (and the concerts I go to, they rumble...)

Glad it was a good time anyway, even if the feel wasn't there. Kind of like drunk sex. You do it, but it isn't quite as fun.

The fine line

(If I remember correctly...)

"Drunk" is a relative term when it comes to sex. A man is supposed to be a little tipsy, enough to allow him to drop his standards before he drops his pants. He's supposed to remember the incident with a slight amount of embarrassment.

A woman is supposed to be one more drink away from barfing and passing out, enough to allow her to completely dispose of all standards before the man drops her pants. The barfing and passing out can happen anytime after she's dropped off on her front porch. She is supposed to remember the incident as being bare-assed at some point.
