Interpersonal skills are usually developed with experience. As you work around people, you learn which behavior gets the tasks done and which ones cause problems.

Many colleges and training seminars teach interpersonal skills courses. You can find them in the classifieds section of newspapers in major cities.

Many books are also available. Some good, but most are useless (in my opinion).

Beyond those choices, you might also take notes on situations which occur in your workplace. Ifyou are doing very well with someone or very badly with someone, try to figure out why this is happening? If possible, ask a third person's opinion. Take notes and think about what happened.

Have you noticed anyone at work who really connects well with people? Someone that nearly everyone likes to be around and work with? There may be several people like that. Get to know those people well. Surround yourself with positive people, people you want to be like. You will start acting like whoever you are around the most, so make sure that you're around people that you want to emulate. Stay clear of people with negative attitudes, because these people do not have good personal skills. Techies are fairly like-minded, so inter-relating to them is much easier since you will have so much in common with them. The trick is to look past the technical knowledge (or lack thereof) with the non-techies. Treat them with courtesy, be open with them, try to get to know them on a personal level to a degree. People work better with those that they are familiar with. It may sound strange, but I've found this to be true. I think the main techie thing to watch is not to be condescending towards non-techies. It took me quite a while to get past this mentality, and I still find myself struggling with it on occassion.

Hope that helps! :)

This isn't an answer, just a complaint about the question. Where you have "his/her" you should have "one's", because the antecedent is "one". Also, "as being" should be "as" and "being as" should be "being". In the Infotech State of the Art series Dijkstra said something like this: If I had to choose programmers I would choose them on excellent command of their native language, not on tricks.

Dinesh,
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and assume that you are working with Americans, and you are from another country. With that in mind...

For most of us, the culture difference between lands is often difficult to overcome because we spend our whole lives in one place or another. Seek to become a citizen of the world.

All humans share (or should) certain values... right to exist, privacy, freedom of speech, right to free passage, etc. Honour those values.

We also resent certain other values... tyranny, violence, disrespect of culture, etc. Avoid these behaviors and the people who practice them.

Finally, as adults we often find it difficult to change our own personal habits. Although it's important to "fit in" with other groups, it is often better to find groups in which we already belong.
