WD external not recognized on windows after ubuntu partition

By manishmk ·
I have a WD 500GB external HDD. I used it with Windows. Some months back, I partitioned my PC and got Ubuntu on it. I also partitioned the External HDD and created a partition to try external booting - just for fun.
Now the problem - When I try to access both windows and ubuntu partitions from Ubuntu, I can see them fine. But Windows is unable to see either of the partitions. It asks me to format the drive.
Is there any way I can make Windows recognize it? Is the FAT partition corrupted? Appreciate any help in advance.

Try reposting this in the 'Q&A' forum. The 'Discussion' forum is for matters of general discussion, not specific problems in search of a solution. The 'Water Cooler' is for non-technical discussions. You can submit a question to 'Q&A' here:

There are TR members who specifically seek out problems in need of a solution. Although there is some overlap between the forums, you'll find more of those members in 'Q&A' than in 'Discussions' or 'Water Cooler'.

Be sure to use the voting buttons to provide your feedback. Voting a '+' does not necessarily mean that a given response contained the complete solution to your problem, but that it served to guide you toward it. This is intended to serve as an aid to those who may in the future have a problem similar to yours. If they have a ready source of reference available, perhaps won't need to repeat questions previously asked and answered. If a post did contain the solution to your problem, you can also close the question by marking the helpful post as "The Answer".

Also you need to understand that Windows can only see it's own Partition Types any Linux Partition will be unreadable to Windows as they are not a FAT or NTFS Partition Types.

You'll also need to tell us how you added the Ubuntu Partition to the drive as it very well may have overwritten the MBR of the drive in a form that Windows can not read.

WD external not recognized on windows after ubuntu partition

Thanks for the response. Should I open a new discussion in Q&A or is there a way to repost this from here itself?
I may have used diskparted from Ubuntu to shorten the windows partition and added the Ubuntu one. Is there a way to put the MBR back so windows can read it?

Just repost to the Q&A. No Text
