WDM Sound Not Working

by bowzzer . Updated 19 years, 7 months ago

Hi there,
I have a strange problem with sound in Windows XP. All the system sounds are not played anymore and the volume control icon in the taskbar is gone.
However, sound is working fine with Winamp or Media Player Classic etc. I think it’s the directx interface that does work but I’m not sure which other methods Windows uses to play sound and how to troubleshoot them.
I guess it has something to do with the WDM engine but un/reinstalling the sound card (NVidia NForce chip ver 5.1) drivers had no effect.
In the Control Panel|Multimedia|Audio tab the MIDI device and in the Voice tab the Playback device is not set up and whatever settings I change in there is not saved and in the Sound tab the Play button is disabled.
Any idea? Please help!
Many thanks!
Silvio
