We haven't had a good 'Nigerian' scam in a while

One of my users received this beauty today. I love that the drawing expiration date was 13 months ago but he's just being notified; that the sender is different from the person to contact; that the notice was sent from London for a South African drawing despite FIFA HQ being in Switzerland; and the e-mail to reply (agentsux@mail.com). Nice touches included a legitimate FIFA link, a bar code on the bottom that I can't wait to scan, and the whole thing was sent as a .PDF attachment.

I actually got a letter sent to me from England

by robo_dev In reply to We haven't had a good 'Ni ...

Some poor gal needed someone to help her smuggle some oil riches out of Iraq.

A couple years ago, I listed some old phone systems on Craigslist for $200.

Some strange looking email arrived saying he would pay $500 if I could take a check, and he would "send his movers right over".

I noted the fact that the time zone in his email was GMT +8 (Australia)....I said I would gladly take a check but questioned why his movers would want to take a six-week sea voyage followed by several hours of driving to pickup $200 worth of phone gear.

Surprisingly, he never replied....in fact the email account was deleted within an hour.

Somewhat more low key but perhaps all the more sinister for it

The current crop of late afternoon / evening calls from the IT Support Centre (insert deep Asian accented english-of-sorts "who can see that your PC is thoroughly infected with the most dangerous of viruses" and for just $400 on your credit card can issue some commands that will clean it all up.

They picked on my mum who (at 84) was most bemused as she doesn't actually own a PC or have any connection to that stupid internetty thingo ...

But similar scams have picked up on other old folk in her village and got their card details and the money. If these people used their energy and wit wisely, they'd probably invent the next Angry Birds.

The Other One

by dogknees In reply to We haven't had a good 'Ni ...

I had an interesting call from the "computer support desk" yesterday. They've changed names recently, but the script is still the same.

I usually call them "very unpleasant" names and hang up. Ask a friend from India what's the worst thing you can call a person from India!
