Webcam recommendations?

By joe.oconnor ·
I am looking for a webcam that can/will email still images or video content. This will be used as a "security" camera. Is there a webcam product out there that will send stills or video without a host computer?

Security Cameras

by otaku_lord In reply to Webcam recommendations?

There are many IP based security systems out there. I know we had a setup in Iraq that ran off a PoE switch and the only thing the server did was display the video onto the monitors for the guards to view. To my knowledge though all cameras need SOME kind of controller to work.

Addendum: I am not a security camera expert but I know how things were set up and I was constantly doing maintenance on the system... in full battle gear.

I haev seen cams that are their own servers

But when I googled, I couldn't quickly find one. But when you do that, you buy into a "fixed" technology, versus using an off the shelf webcam and third party software to build a solution. The latter will be more flexible for sure.

I recommend a program called vitamin d video surveillance

it was free and in beta but has since gone full. You can still try it out for free, but all your features will be their.

or just google it.
