Weird DUN Activity

By saihib ·
Here's the situation: 5 computer Workgroup. All machines running Win98 SE. We recently purchased a HP 4550N color laser that is attached to the network with a JetDirect card. Every machine, except one, can print just fine. One machine, when you senda print job, launches DUN prompting you to connect to our BellSouth dial-up service. After closing DUN the print job goes through just fine. Everything works, it's just that this is annoying much like people who never close their questions. Anyone ever seen this happen?

On the misbehaving computer check all tcp/ip settings. Compare them to the computers that are working. Pay particular attention to gateway and proxy settings. Look in both the dialup adapter and nic settings. If not there check the tcp/ip address and subnet mask for proper settings. Is the jetdirect software installed? If so reinstall the software.

Check the details tab to see if the print job is being sent to the right tcp/ip address or the proper UNC.

Hope this helps.

Also check Internet Explorer --> Tools --> Internet Options --> Connections and verify that this is set to "Never dial a connection" OR use "Dial whenevr a network connection is not present." Test again.

JetDirect software is installed and has been re-installed.

Yes, I've seen people never close their questions many times.

Good luck.

This would happen if you don't optimalize the use of hosts file.

The problem with JetDirect is that you could only reach it by broadcasting to the networks. By default, broadcast trigger DUN.

Edit files HOSTS. (without extension) or create one in your C:\WINDOWS directory.

Add this entry..
<jet_direct_ip_address> <jet_direct_name>

something like this:
192.168.0.20 printserver

By then, your network would use broadcast as last resort.

Hope it helps.

One other thing to optimalize,

Go to Network Applet in Control Panel,
click Client For Microsoft Network
click Properties

choose Quick Logon in the radio button in the lower part of the box

That would prevent DUN to be called each time you start-up your computer.
