Weird Printing Problem

By sarahb ·
Hi,

We are running Office 2000 (SR1 and SR2) on Windows 2000 (SP1 and SP2). When printing a word document some words just will not print. Sometime whole sentences. Its there in print preview but will not come out on the printer. It seems thatif we print the same document from Word 97 it is ok. We've tried installing different print drivers, using different printers, saving the document in different formats, deleting the text and re-entering it! Everything! But it just won't print! These are documents we send to clients so we have to get this sorted out - I'm beginning to hear the cry to go back to Office 97, and I don't want that! Any help would be fantastic! Thank you.

Weird Printing Problem

This has happened with me on Office 97 in Word as well, only on specific printers. The solution as I recall (I am away from the office just now) was a checkbox for graphics or the dpi on the properties of the specific printer. You might also check the Microsoft Knowledge Base at www.microsoft.com (choose support) using a question like "some letters don't print," this is how we found the solution.

Thank you for your reply but it didn't help in this case. I think it has something to do with the style applied to the text, because when I took off the style and applied the normal one, it printed fine. Why it was only doing it to some words and not others I don't know though! Maybe its just a difference in the way Word 2000 handles styles compared to Word 97.

Weird Printing Problem

I recently saw this problem with Outlook 2000 when printing to a printer with not enough memory. In printer properties, if the option is there, reduce the print resolution from 600 to 300.

Another possible cause of this type of thing in Word is hidden text. Find a word that is not printing, highlight it, and click Format and Font. Make sure the "hidden" checkbox is cleared. Note that since many paragraph formats, such as bullets, are saved in the end-of-paragraph character, hiding this character will play havoc with the document appearance, and it is a bear to track down unless you are looking for it. Print the document using File Print, hit the options button, and turn on printing hidden text, and see if the printout changes.

Good luck.
